Friday is the day of congregational prayers for Muslims. In the place of the regular noon-time prayer, there is a short sermon followed by a short prayer in congregation at the masjid. The service begins with the call to prayer, followed by a lecture (rather, two short lectures with a brief pause in the middle). After the lecture (called a khutbah), the congregation stands to follow the imam in the prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A masjid is free of statues and utilizes rugs instead of pews. It is appropriate to remove one\u2019s shoes before entering the prayer area in a moasjid, so that the floors and carpets aren\u2019t covered with dirt\u2014after all, that is where people pray.<\/span><\/p>\n

Islamic Center of America is governed by a Board of Trustees. The board is responsible for overseeing finances, policies and procedures, and legal matters with outside entities. The board performs primary oversight and strategic functions and oversees the overall management of the Masjid. The board is composed of both men and women volunteers. Chosen from among Masjid attendees who demonstrate a clear commitment to the Islamic Center of America\u2019s mission of peace and prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Islamic Center of America is made up of an assorted group of professionals, lifelong St. Joseph residents, students, and business owners. The Muslim community in St. Joseph is small (numbering about 100 individuals), but you will find us deeply entrenched in the community. We are police officers, educators, doctors, scientists, business owners, meat plant workers, and community organizers in St. Joseph.<\/p>\n

Many ethnicities attend ICSJ including those with origins in Pakistan, Germany, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan, and Egypt. The languages (besides English, of course) spoken are mainly Urdu and Arabic.<\/p>\n

The age groups range from infants to elders with the majority of the community members ranging from 40 to 60 years old.<\/p>\n
